The 1990 Porsche 944 TURBO

The Porsche's we owned - History from 2005-2006

This car was bought on first sight. This car has it all. The big brakes, ABS, 250 Hp, limited slip differential, oil cooled transmission, handling, sport seats, etc, etc . This was the closest one can ever come to a Turbo cup car. This was a street legal ‘Turbo cup’. These cars are truly underrated for the money that we pay for these cars, it is absolutely value.

This car have relatively low mileage (130,000 km) and in mint condition. I was for some time tempted to show this car as it will again with elbow grease and polish clean up at the South African concourse events. For a while I used this car on a daily basis but in heavy traffic the first gear was to fast at idle speed. This made that you were on the clutch a lot stop start is not nice. This car wants to go! I had a lot of fun on and off the track. There is a lot of fast car owners that did not like a old 944 giving it stick. This car was used on the track as both a fun-day and time trial car. This car on road tires was very competitive and a lot of fun.

Selling this car was not easy as it must have been the most car for the least money ever spend. It had to make way for a more modern car.

The Driving impressions of the 944 TURBO

Here are some of my impressions with regards to driveability You must keep in mind that the older cars should not be compared to the technology available today .

Performance :

There is no other car (except the 964 and better) that can compare to this 250 HP peace of beast. This car has everything – Horsepower, Big 4 pod brakes, ABS, limited slip oil cooled differential, sport suspension, sport seats, etc and the best it is all standard!!!!!! Get past the turbo lag and it is a red hot pocket rocket. This car is very misleading in it’s performance. Take it out on the road and before you know it you are doing 160 MPH and it does not feel like it, but put a car next to it and it turns into a monster!!! It just leaves them behind and then you feel the performance levels of the car. I have had so many other cars see the rear end of a 944 and they did not like it!!!!! This car was very quick of the mark and had a top speed of 162 MPH (260 KMH). It had a five speed gearbox and the shift was perfect.

Handling :

The 944 turbo with all the right gear and the standard 16” fat tracks it is superb surpast!!!!!!! No wonder the Turbo Cup cars are still hot performers on the track. This is the most balanced car to drive, just watch the boost when cornering it can catch you out.

Braking ability :

The braking ability of this car out of this world. It does not know such a thing as brake fade. It is perfecto!!!!.

Overall:

This is the car to have and to use and to drive and to race and to corner and to thrill and to please and to stop and to do what ever you want !!!!!!! This is the top of all non 911’s.
