THE DURAND PORSCHE HISTORY

The Porsche's we owned - History from 1983 - Present

I would like to give you a brief introductory to our motoring history. We have owned quite a lot of cars. Some of them which made a huge impact on my life as well as turning me into a PETROL HEAD. The family I grew up with was FORD mad. This was not the case with me as my cars ranged from Alfa, Ford, Renault, Fiat, Datsun, Mazda, Mercedes Benz, BMW, Austin Healey, Truimph Spitfire Mk 2, MG Y Type, MGB GT, Toyota, Volkswagen, Mini and finally Porsche. I have owned fourteen Porsches from 1983 to present. The most favorite 'non Porsche' cars were - Renault Gordini, Austin Healey Frog eye, MGB GT (a string of four), The Gordini topping this non Porsche list, with the Mini topping the 'high tech' car list.

The most favorite of all cars owned is the latest addition, my dream car - The Porsche GT3 RS.

I would like to give you an overview and my impressions of all the Porsches we owned, in the order that we have owned them. Sorry for the GT3 RS being last!!

1957 - Porsche 356A

first 356a

The first Porsche was a 1957 356A coupe. This car was far from original it had B windows and a B nose crest apart from this the body was in a reasonable state. The car was fitted with a Super 90 motor. This made the car a real Hot Rod. The wheels was not original nor was the steering. The car was a lot of fun and I spent very little money on it. I fitted New Brazilian rims and rebuild the two Solex carburetors. The engine smoked a little but that did not bother the performance The car was tested on the Kyalami straight during one of the 100 mile an hour events at 103.4 mph (166.5 kmh).

This car was in my possession for about a year (1983) when we decided to sell and buy a 911.

1973 Porsche 911 T

first 911T

This was the first of the 911 in the family. The car was a 1973 911T coupe. in Concourse condition and won the 1982 De Eta. It was a viper green monster. The car was completely restored by the previous owner. The engine was rebuilt with 2.7 Carrera Pistons and sleeves pushing out in excess 190 Hp. The car was fitted with 6 and 7 " cookie cutter wheels. This car was in my possession for about a year (1984) when we decided to sell and the main reason for this was that it was Left hand drive and in South Africa that was a problem and for a brief spell we were Porsche-less (1985-1995)

1959 Porsche 356A

second 356a

This was to us the cars of all 356 es.A 1959 356A coupe (Damen). I discovered it in the back of a second hand garage and the car was from an estate. It took me more than six months to purchase This car was completely rebuild some 18 years ago end showed some signs of use especially the drivers seat. other than that I fitted a new battery and drove the car home. The paint was Duco 300 and it took a lot of elbow grease and polish to get the car to look like it was just painted. The braking system was completely rebuilt and the whole underpan repainted. The odd item was not original but this was soon rectified to get the car into a concourse winner. This car won quite a few trophies and was used on the Tour Du Cap. The car was fitted with a 1600 Damen engine. Pushing out a full 60 Hp and that was good for a 100 mph which it could still achieve. I acquired a 356 SC 95 HP engine and this fitted straight into the back of the A. Man what a car !!!!! it could do 115 mph and it was the closest to a 356 Carrera you could get.

1960 Porsche 356B

This car was bought while it was at a panelbeater. This car was just re-bodied and painted. It stood at the panelbeater for a few years. The car was completely stripped and the body, from what I could see was looking good, until I got it home. I put my finger trough the floorboard! I sold the car (within a week!) to a friend who was looking for work, a lot of WORK! At the end he did a beautiful restoration job.

1990 Porsche 911 Carrera 2

first 964

This car is a 1990 Carrera 2 coupe. and was acquired in 2001. The car was fitted with tiptronic and had a few extras that made it into a real special car. The extras were 993 cup wheels, sport coil over suspension and some cosmetic changes i.e. 993 door handles and rear view mirrors and third stop light.

1973 Porsche 911 T

second 911 T

This was again a classic 911 a 1973 911T coupe. but this time it was right hand drive and in absolute mint condition . The car was a dead stock 2.4 and had a mere 145,000 km on the clock. This car was bought purely on emotion.

1958 Porsche 356A

third 356a

This car a 1958 356A coupe. was bought from a frient who have had it for ages. This car was original in all ways except the set of Weber carburetors and the 5.5 wide rims. This car was also an emotional buy as my friend owned it when I bought the first 356A. We used this car on the Tour De Namib where we had some misfortunes that resulted in severe engine damage. This car was sold after two years to finance the two daughters transporters (non Porsche)

1982 Porsche 911 SC

first 911SC

This car a 1982 911 SC. was bought after all the other cars was sold to finance the old English house. When we sold off all the cars I suffered a severe Porsche withdrawal syndrome. and bought this low kilometer SC. This car was in absolute mint condition and required plenty elbow grease and polish to turn it into a concourse winner

1959 Porsche 356A Super

forth 356a

Again the concourse itch was there. I saw this car a 1959 356A Super coupe. for the first time after it stood under a tree for close to twenty years. I wanted to buy this car but the current owner said no he is going to restore it. Looking at the lines and everything it was a perfect car to make into the best 356A in South Africa. Next I heard it was sold!!!!!! I found out that the new owners in nobody else but the person that restored the ivory 356A more than twenty years ago. He bought it as a project car and soon found that restoring 356A's is very costly. A year later I bought the car for an arm and a leg. It still needed a lot of work to get it to be the best. After spending .

1984 944

This car was bought as a daily work horse who in our terms had the shortes life span. Two weeks!!!!! This was not because of being a 944 but due to the fact that I fell in love with the very under rated marque called 944 unfortunately I saw a 944 S2 that impressed me hugely.

1989 Porsche 944 S2

first 944s2a

Again a 1989 944S2. a work horse purchase at this time we have won more that 10 concourse titles and it was decided non of this concourse cars anymore. T

1990 Porsche 944 TURBO

first 944T

This car a 1990 944 Turbo. was bought on first sight. This car has it all. The big brakes, ABS, 250 Hp, limited slip differential, oil cooled transmission, handling etc, etc These cars are truly underrated for the money that we pay for these cars it is absolutely value. This car have relatively low mileage (130,000 km) and in mint condition. I was for some time tempted to show this car as it will again with elbow grease and polish clean up at the South African concourse events.

1998 Porsche 968 Boxster

first 968

This car a 1998 Boxster. was bought by my oldest daughter, Bonita. We bought it from her in 2010 when she upgraded to a Boxster 2.7 2004 model. This is an absolute dream - I drive the Boxster to work and back - every day !!!.

2000 Porsche 968 Boxster S

first 968s

This car a 2000 Boxster S. was bought as a result of driving my daughters' car. I was contemplating upgrading to the newer range of Porsches and all the specifications, reviews and discussions indicated that this will be a good buy. To date it is working well as I am using the car everyday on a round trip of 160 Km's. The car is very quite inside considering that it has a soft top. I do not let the top down much as when I was young. The suspension is not as hard as the 911's I have driven but still hard enough to enjoy it on the track. I have had a lot of track-work which I enjoyed a lot. It must be remembered that this car was never in tended as a track car.I have had some major mishaps because of this. It cost us to replace a very eexpensive engine.Until the time that We sold it I enyoued it. - P.S. The only reason why I sold it. I wanted a car that could be used on the track. The car is very driveable with the torque available low down. It pulls strong even in sixth gear passing a car.

2000 Porsche 996 GT3

first gt3

We bought this car a 2000 996 GT3. on impulse! I was considering at upgrading to an early 996 Carrera.I was entering a market that I felt not so comfortable in fitting with my 'ride a car for a few year, improve it and sell it of for something better'. It is a market that competes price wise with to many up-market cars and very few selective buyers. At this stage it felt that in a years time, when I want to sell it (I felt) might take longer than normal to get the right buyer. It was always in the back of my mind that sometime in the far away future I would reach the GT3 goal. A few visits to Porsche Center, a few financial calculations and calculations and calculations, a test drive in a GT3, some bartering about selling the Boxster S, arranging some finance and WHAM! BHAM! THANK YOU MAM! - HEY! I WAS THE PROUD OWNER OF A GT3! named the BEAST. It was one of my many dreams coming true. What a dream come true. Every-time I get in the car sit down, and turn the key it is still as if I am dreaming. This is and I am sure will always be my ultimate car. This is the wild beast of all beasts. The roughness of the idle, the load tone of the exhaust note drives me WILD! It gives me a smile-grin-goose pimps everytime a drive this car. The nice thing about the high tech cars is that you can drive it in peak hour traffic and it purrs like a kitten. Give it open road and a lot of accelerator man can this wild beast unleash itself. Beyond Wild!!!!!

2004 Porsche 996 GT3 RS

first gt3

The 2004 996 GT3 RS. was a dream come true purchase. Ever since we owned a GT3 it became apparent that at some stage there will be a time were I can not resist to buy a RS. At first the price gap was to big but at the end I shuffled some priorities and my dream came tru. There is not a lot that one can say when you are a Porsche enthusiast and get the oportunity to own such a magnificent car! This car is my ultimate of all normal aspirated Porsche cars. This is the last of the non techno cars. I do not thing that I will own anything soon after this monster.
